2017 Chrystal Award Winners

FRANCINE BARCHETT of Benton Harbor, Michigan and NICHOLAS GRANDSTAFF of Emmetsburg, Iowa are the co-recipients of the 2017 John Chrystal Award

Francine and Nicholas both received the award for their outstanding work as 2016 Borlaug-Ruan International Interns. 

Francine interned at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Pantecheru, India where her research focused on the nutritional and health outcomes of governmental sanitation campaigns. Nicholas interned at M.S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Chennai, India where his research focused on studying the livelihood capitals and value chains of tapioca, coffee, finger millets, and black bean crops. 

The John Chrystal Award was established in 2001 in the spirit of John Chrystal's commitment to enriching Iowa's relationship with the world and his belief that everyone is entitled to a sense of dignity and adequate food. The award is presented annually to the intern who most strongly reflects Mr. Chrystal’s commitment.

Francine is a student at the Cornell University, majoring in International Agriculture and Rural Development. Nicholas is a student at the University of Iowa majoring in Economics and Mathematics. 

Francine and Nicholas received their awards prior to the awarding of the 2017 World Food Prize to Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina of Nigeria.
