The World Food Prize Foundation

2003 Ceremony

THE 2003 WORLD FOOD PRIZE was awarded to Catherine Bertini of the United States in a ceremony at the magnificent Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines on October 16. The ceremony took place during the 2003 Borlaug Dialogue. The year's theme was "Defeating Hunger and Famine."

Ms. Bertini was the first woman to be solely awarded the prize and was honored for her incredible work on the United Nations World Food Programme, enabling it to be the most responsive relief organization in the world.

The ceremony was preceded by a brass quintet and distinguished guests were announced with trumpet horns. Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman delivered a message from President George W. Bush at the ceremony, which was attended by over 700 people, including dignitaries from around the world.
