Fatima Denton
Director, Special Initiatives Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN ECA)
Fatima Denton is the Director for the Special Initiatives Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). She previously led the International Development Research Centre's (IDRC) research on adaptation strategies. She joined IDRC in 2006 after working as a senior energy planner with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in Denmark.
Dr. Denton also worked with the energy program of Enda Tiers Monde in Senegal on issues like sustainable development and climate change vulnerability and adaptation, as well as food security, local governance, water, and energy poverty in the Sahel. She has written articles on energy poverty, gender and energy, and climate change adaptation. She is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was also a member of UNEP’s Scientific Technical Advisory Panel. Fatima Denton holds a PhD in political science and development studies from Birmingham University (UK).
