Gareth Johnstone

Gareth Johnstone is Senior Director of Aquatic Food Systems, CGIAR, and Director General at WorldFish. A UK national, Gareth is a geographer with 25 years of professional experience in natural resource management and research, with an emphasis on governance, policy, capacity building and institutional development. He is an advocate for cross-disciplinary, participatory research approaches in environment and development, and he specializes in integrated coastal management, ecosystem approaches to aquatic food systems, sustainable livelihoods, food security and co-management, particularly within small-scale fisheries and aquaculture. He joined WorldFish in 2011 as a scientist and went on to lead the CGIAR Research Program in Cambodia on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS). As Director General, he led the development and implementation of WorldFish’s strategy Aquatic Foods for Healthy People and Planet. Senior Director of Aquatic Food Systems, Johnstone will shape the new frontiers of agricultural research by bridging food production systems in land and water.
