Santiago del Solar

Farmer, Argentina

Santiago del Solar Dorrego is a sixth generation family farmer from Argentina, where he plants soybeans, barley, wheat, sunflower, maize and also raises dairy cattle.  The family operation began in the 1830’s and started with ranching.  Today it has evolved to a high-technology precision operation with a range of crops for local use and export.  Santiago has been a member of CREA, the farmer’s association of Argentina since 1991 and was President of CREA’s Agriculture Commission from 2005 to 2007.  He also served as Vice-President of MAIZER (the maize value chain association of Argentina) from 2008-2009 and was MAIZER President from 2009-2011. He received the La Nacion-Banco Galicia prize, “Best Farmer 2015."

Santiago received his degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires and lives with his wife and son.  He continues to invest in his own farm and provide advisory services to many family farm operations in Argentina.  He speaks in global symposiums, including the UN FAO about the needs of farmers for policies, training and technology.  His commitment to sustainable and profitable agriculture, both in Argentina and globally, is his life’s mission.
