Hannah and Chase both received the award for their outstanding work as 2018 Borlaug-Ruan International Interns. Hannah interned at the China National Hybrid Rice Research & Development Center in Changsha, China, where her research focused on using genome editing technology to improve seed longevity. Chase interned at the World Vegetable Center in Patancheru, India, where his research focused on improving mungbean resistance to insect pests. |

Hannah is a student at Cornell University majoring in Environment and Sustainability. Chase is a student at Iowa State University majoring in Agronomy. Hannah and Chase received their awards prior to the awarding of the 2019 World Food Prize to Simon Groot of the Netherlands. |


HANNAH JO of Bear, Delaware, and CHASE KRUG of Marion, Iowa, are the co-recipients of the 2019 John Chrystal Award.
The John Chrystal Award was established in 2001 in the spirit of John Chrystal's commitment to enriching Iowa's relationship with the world and his belief that everyone is entitled to a sense of dignity and adequate food. The award is presented annually to the intern who most strongly reflects Mr. Chrystal’s commitment.
