To achieve systemic transformation in food system and consumption patterns, we must begin by transforming soil health. Healthy soils are critical for producing nutritious foods, closing water and nutrient cycles, and sequestering carbon. Land is also the primary source of income for smallholder farmers globally. If we feed the soil, the soil can feed the world. Optimized use of mineral fertilizers, combined with organic amendments in integrated crop and landscape management, is the foundation to achieving food system goals—increased production of nutritious food, increased farmer profitability, enhanced environmental protection, and improved sustainability. Our panelists will discuss the policy, science, implementation, and impact of smart fertilization strategies for soil health to enhance agriculture productivity and transform lives in Africa, while reflecting on the global discourse on sustainable agriculture.
