Hon. Laura Elena Suazo Torres

Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, Republic of Honduras

Laura Elena Suazo Torres is the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock in the Republic of Honduras. She is currently the President ProTempore of the Food and Nutritional Security Plan of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (PLAN SAN CELAC). She is also a member of the board of directors of organizations for agro-food development: President of the Board of Directors of the National Agricultural Development Bank of Honduras BANADESA. As Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, she has been invited to participate in dialogue spaces and conferences such as the Meeting of the Board of Directors on Food Systems of the World Economic Forum in New York City and the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Summit on Food Systems. Additionally, she participated in the XII International Meeting of Intermediate Cities, a space for the exchange of experiences in Mexico with the presence of different Latin American countries.

Previously, she worked for 15 years at the Zamorano University where she achieved the category of Full Professor, successfully coordinated projects related to the promotion of adaptation to climate change, organic agriculture and farms, in addition to leading the Environmental and Development Engineering Program and venturing into applied research and the writing of books, manuals and publications in scientific journals.

Additionally, Secretary of State Suazo Torres has served for more than 15 years in different positions related to the promotion of sustainable agriculture, food security, climate change, comprehensive risk management and inclusive sustainable development with international cooperation and national organizations. Her experience is linked to voluntary service in development and alternative financing organizations where she has held management positions.

Secretary of State Suazo Torres received a PhD from Cornell University in New York in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. She also has three master's degrees in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences; MSc. in Agricultural Education from Louisiana State University, MSc. in Climate Change from the European University of the Atlantic and MSc. in Environmental Management and Auditing from the International Ibero-American University.
