India - AVRDC

World Vegetable Center

The World Vegetable Center (AVRDC) in Hyderabad, India has hosted five high school interns since 2010.

Established in 1971, the AVRDC works to alleviate poverty and malnutrition through the increased production and consumption of safe vegetables.

The AVRDC carries out research and development in health policy, climate change, malnutrition, and women's livelihood improvement.

Headquartered in Shanhua, Taiwan, the AVRDC also has research centers in Thailand, India, and Tanzania, among other countries.

Interns at the AVRDC work alongside renowned international researchers and experts - like Dr. M. L. Chadha, Dr Ray-yu Yang, Dr. Satish Sain, and Dr. Triveni Chandrapakasam - in the fields and villages of Hyderabad.

The students also have the opportunity to to tour Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Hyderabad - a leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics - and travel around India with their host families and colleagues to see the Brihadishwara temple, Hussain Sagar Lake, Birla Mandir, Laad bazar, Golconda Fort, Charminar market and the parks along Necklace Road.
