Nicole Barreca Prenger
Senior Director II, Global Programs and Strategic Communications

Nicole Barreca Prenger rejoined the World Food Prize Foundation in August 2023 and was promoted in January 2025 to Senior Director II, Global Programs and Strategic Communications. In this expanded role, she oversees all global programming while continuing to lead strategic communications efforts, working closely with Foundation CEO Thomas J. Vilsack and President Mashal Husain to elevate the organization's brand, expand partnerships and enhance global engagement. She drives the strategic vision across all divisions, ensuring the Foundation’s mission reaches key stakeholders worldwide.
Previously, Nicole served as Senior Director, Strategic Communications, where she led the development and implementation of the Foundation’s communications strategy, increasing its visibility and strengthening its impact among global audiences.
Nicole also worked for the Foundation from 2012 to 2022, holding various positions, most recently as Director, Communications and Events. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in managing the Foundation’s global brand and communications strategy while overseeing the Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates, which welcomes over 20,000 visitors annually. She was instrumental in planning and executing the annual Laureate Award Ceremony, Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue and Global Youth Institute for nearly a decade.
Beyond the Foundation, Nicole has worked in the agricultural startup sector, collaborating with CEOs to develop strategic communications plans that drive growth and enhance brand reputation. She has extensive experience in agriculture technologies, biologicals, crop protection, data management, pollination technology and artificial intelligence, deepening her understanding of their transformative potential in the industry.
Nicole holds a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Journalism and Print Journalism with a minor in Mass Communications from Grand View University (2012) and a master’s degree in Communication Leadership from Drake University (2015).
