Jemimah Njuki

Director for Africa, International Food Policy Research Institute

Dr. Jemimah Njuki is the Director for Africa at the International Food Policy Research Institute and the Custodian for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment for the UN Food Systems Summit 2021.  She is also a Food Systems 2021 Champion. She has worked for over 20 years in gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa and Asia. Prior to joining the International Food Policy Research Institute, she led the Growth and Economic Opportunities program at Canada’s International Development Research Centre, the Women in Agriculture Program at CARE USA, and the Poverty, Gender and Impact Program at the International Livestock Research Institute. She is the Convener of the East and Southern Africa Gender and Livelihoods Network, and the founding Editor of the Journal of Gender, Agriculture and Food Security, a journal that promotes the voices of scientists from the global south working on gender equality.  Dr Njuki is an Aspen New Voices Fellow and serves on various Boards including the African Women in Agriculture Research and Development (AWARD), the Africa-EU Partnership on Agriculture and Food Security, the International Panel on Food Systems, and the Africa Voices Foundation. Dr Njuki writes extensively on issues of women’s empowerment, gender-based violence, women’s rights. She is the founder of the One Million Girls Trust, a trust that provides educational scholarships for girls and computers to rural schools so that girls have access to technology from an early age.
