Vet Konect is a digital animal health platform reimagining animal care across Nigeria and other African countries by leveraging mobile connectivity and artificial intelligence to provide animal health coverage and social protection for livestock farmers regardless of the barriers of distance.
One of Africa’s biggest livestock production challenges is the lack of affordable and accessible animal care. According to the World Organization for Animal Health, over $445 million is lost annually in Nigeria due to preventable livestock diseases and poor access to animal health services. This has led to livestock farmers, especially in rural and underserved communities, relying on unregulated antibiotic use, increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which today accounts for over 700,000 deaths in Africa annually, as reported by the World Health Organization.
In addressing these challenges, Vet Konect has built a digital animal health platform that directly connects livestock farmers to qualified animal health professionals through their mobile devices regardless of the barriers of distance, thereby addressing the challenge of quality and timely care for their livestock. Our artificial intelligence-powered disease predictor and feed calculator enhance productivity for farmers in real time. We currently have over 3,000+ onboarded animal health professionals, making us the single largest independent aggregator of animal health professionals on the African continent. We have reached over 150,000 livestock farmers across eight African countries since launching in 2022. Our early warning and learning system effectively accounts for smallholder livestock farmers in rural communities.
According to the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Africa is home to over 600,000 animal owners, with over 1.4 billion livelihoods directly dependent on livestock productivity as a main source of income. This is a huge demographic we cannot ignore.
With Africa’s population predicted to double by 2050 to over 4 billion people, this will put tremendous pressure on our already fragile livestock resources. Vet Konect is on a mission to avert that tragedy by ensuring comprehensive animal care coverage for everyone everywhere.
