ClimaVault Africa

ClimaVault Africa is a climate-smart agritech startup revolutionizing post-harvest handling in Sub-Saharan Africa through solar-powered cold storage and plant-based preservation solutions. We address a critical issue — over 50% of perishable produce in the region spoils due to inadequate cooling infrastructure, leading to massive food losses and reduced income for smallholder farmers.

Our innovation includes solar-powered IoT-enabled cold storage hubs that extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables from 2 to 21 days. This solution is designed to operate off-grid and is accessible through a pay-as-you-store model, making it affordable for smallholder farmers, market vendors, and farmer cooperatives. Complementing the cooling hubs is MunaFresh®, our plant-based edible coating that further extends the freshness of produce without refrigeration.

Since 2021, we have reached over 124,000 customers, created 60+ jobs, and helped reduce post-harvest losses by 42%, saving over 57,000 metric tons of food. Our impact translates into a 35% average increase in income for users of our technology. Our operations currently span Uganda and Zimbabwe, and we aim to scale to 28 hubs and 1 million liters of MunaFresh® sold annually, supported by storage fees, product sales, subscriptions, and carbon credit opportunities.

ClimaVault Africa contributes directly to global food security, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. By reducing food loss, we ease pressure on land and water resources, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resilience for farming communities vulnerable to climate change. Our inclusive model empowers smallholder farmers—particularly women and youth—through access to innovative, income-boosting technologies.

We believe agriculture is the foundation of a sustainable future. By transforming post-harvest systems with clean energy and biotechnology, ClimaVault Africa is feeding nations, uplifting communities, and protecting the planet—one crate at a time.
