2019 Borlaug Dialogue Breakout Sessions

Climate Change in a Digital World - How to Leverage Technology to Improve Farmers' Resilience to Climate Change

10/17/2019 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM
Dubuque Room, 3rd Floor | Des Moines Marriott Downtown
Sandrine Chetail-Armour, Senior Director

Increasing climate variability is affecting agricultural production and food security worldwide, threatening to cut production by 25% in the face of a growing global population. As weather patterns become more unreliable, farmers and pastoralists face growing uncertainty about actions they can take to maintain or maximize their production. It is time to leverage all tools and technologies we have at our disposal to help producers, policy-makers, and systems’ actors make the right decision in adapting to climate change.

This session invites practitioners, those who are intrigued by what technology can offer, and those who have experience with digital solutions, to come and discover what technology can offer and the challenges of applying these technologies in fragile contexts.

Moderated by Mercy Corps, a panel of experts from Wageningen University and Research, Mercy Corps Mongolia and Mercy Corps Agrifin Accelerate will present a range of digital solutions developed to assist farmers and systems’ actors make the right decisions. They will share with us how digital solutions responded to identified needs, discuss some of the challenges, and explore recommendations moving forward. As our session will be early in the morning, a breakfast buffet will be available.
