Title: Growing a Well Fed World Luncheon: Women Farmers Lead the Way featuring Sir Fazle Hasan Abed

Start and end time: 11am to 12:30pm, Wednesday, October 14

Location: Des Moines Marriott, Cedar Rapids & Council Bluffs Rooms

Description: We live on a planet where there is enough food for everyone. Yet, almost 800 million people, mostly women and children, endure chronic hunger and suffer from nutritional deficiencies. While current production can feed the world, people living in poverty face many hurdles in obtaining sufficient food to ensure health and nutrition. The good news is that a just and healthy food system can be achieved.  And empowering and investing in women farmers is one of the most effective ways to fight hunger and create a more resilient and secure planet.  The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that if “women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.”
Oxfam America invites you to a free luncheon at the opening of the 2015 Borlaug Dialogue that lifts up the role of small-scale women farmers in creating a food secure and resilient world. Special guest speakers will include the 2015 World Food Prize Laureate, Sir Fazle Abed, founder of BRAC; Ray Offenheiser, President and Executive Director of Oxfam America; and Female Food Heroes from Tanzania and Nigeria, Bahati Muriga and Monica Maigari.. The menu will represent foods and techniques that can contribute to global food security and resilience..
