In signing this Memorandum, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, Ambassador Terry Brandstad, traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica and attended the 2023 Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, and joined the 22nd Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture.

“As Americans from across our two great continents,” said Ambassador Brandstad in his remarks, “we are always looking to innovate, diversify, and perfect our agriculture, food and economic systems.  We share that spirit with farmers and farm families across the world. Farmers are the world’s true innovation engines and it is our job to empower them.”

The 2023 Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas serves as a platform for high-level discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the agriculture sector in the Americas. With representatives from across the continent, the event aims to foster collaboration and share innovative solutions to address pressing issues such as food security, climate change, and agricultural sustainability.

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), focuses on promoting agricultural development and rural well-being among its 34 member countries through international technical cooperation. IICA's strategic objectives include enhancing the agricultural sector's contributions to economic growth, improving rural well-being, facilitating trade, and increasing resilience to climate change.

2020 World Food Prize Laureate Rattan Lal also attended the event and spoke in Forum 2: “Scaling up climate funding: opportunities for agriculture.” Ambassador Brandstad’s presence reinforced the commitment of leaders in the field to address the challenges of our time and pave the way for a more sustainable and food- secure future.
