(May 1, 2012) The World Food Prize Foundation congratulates Dr. Pedro Sanchez, its 2002 Laureate, on being elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Sanchez is currently Director of the Tropical Agriculture and Rural Environment Program at The Earth Institute, Columbia University, Palisades, N.Y. He was selected as the 2002 World Food Prize Laureate for pioneering ways to restore fertility to some of the world’s poorest and most degraded soils.
The National Academy of Sciences on Tuesday announced the election of 84 new members, Dr. Sanchez among them, and 21 foreign associates from 15 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the public good. Since 1863, the nation's leaders have turned to the National Academy of Sciences for advice on the scientific and technological issues that frequently affect policy decisions.
