Today, on World Creativity and Innovation Day, the World Food Prize Foundation announced that Dr. Mortimer Neufville, President and CEO of the 1890 Universities Foundation, has joined the Council of Advisors.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Neufville to the Foundation Council of Advisors,” said Barbara Stinson, President of the World Food Prize Foundation. “His vast expertise in agricultural science and education, on a national and global level, is an important addition to the Foundation. We particularly welcome his extensive experience working with Historically Black Land-Grant Colleges and Universities, where we hope to form stronger partnerships and connections for our Youth and Dialogue programs.”
On the Council, Dr. Neufville will review, advise and guide the World Food Prize leadership on their policies and the design and implementation of Foundation programs. Other responsibilities of Dr. Neufville will include participating in appointing members of the World Food Prize Laureate Selection Committee and endorsing the Selection Committee’s choice of a new Laureate each year.
“I am honored to have been selected to serve on the prestigious World Food Prize Council of Advisors and contribute to Dr. Norman Borlaug’s efforts towards hunger and poverty alleviation in the world,” said Dr. Neufville.
Prior to Dr. Neufville’s current role as President and CEO of the 1890 Universities Foundation, he held several other positions in higher education. Dr. Neufville was Executive Vice President and Director of Federal Relations for the Association of Public Land Grant Universities (APLU); Dean of Agriculture, Vice President and President of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and President of Coppin State University.
Dr. Neufville has also received several awards through his various involvement in agriculture, including an Honorary Doctor of Science from Tuskegee University and the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Florida. He served as Board Chair for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, ACDI/VOCA, and was on the Board of International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC). In 2002 he was elected to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame, where he served as Board Chair. He also directly assisted in the creation of the Food System Leadership Institute (FSLI).
“Dr. Neufville is a wonderful addition to the Council of Advisors,” said Paul E. Schickler, Chair of the World Food Prize Foundation Council of Advisors. “His experience with the 1890 Land-Grant Universities, enabled by the Morrill Act, will bring added focus to the critical research coming from these institutions as we address the challenges of productivity, nutrition, climate change, soil health and water quality.”
Dr. Neufville began his education at the Jamaica School of Agriculture. He received his BS degree from Tuskegee University and his Master’s Degree and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
