China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center

The China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center (CNHRRDC) in Changsha, China, has hosted eleven high school students since 2004.

Established in 1984, the CNHRRDC's are to eradicate malnutrition and poverty through the development and distribution of new strains of hybrid rice.

The CNHRRDC carries out research and development on hybrid rice.

Interns at the CNHRRDC work alongside renowned international researchers and experts - Dr. Yuan Longping and Dr. Xin Yeyun - in the CNHRRDC's research labs in Changsha.

The students also have the opportunity to travel around China with their host families and colleagues to visit the Yuelu mountain, Hunan Provincial Museum, Chairman Mao's birthplace, Red Leaf Pavilion, Lushan Temple, Yunlu Palace, Zheng Ji Jia canyon, Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace.

Who will pick me up at the airport?  Where exactly should I meet this person?  Who would I contact and at what phone number if my flight is behind schedule and extremely late in arriving?  

A staff member of CNHRRDC will pick you up at the Huanghua international airport, Changsha, Hunan province, China. 


What is the weather usually like during the period June through August?

The daily mean temperature is 24-30 C (75-86 F). The highest temperature is about 38 C (100 F) in the hottest season in Changsha.


Describe the range of attire required during the internship:

Is the dress code business or casual?

Casual is okay.


General description of accommodations:

Dorm-style housing?  Home-hosting with a family?

You will be accommodated at the training center near the lab. It is dorm-style housing.

Individual or common bathrooms?

There is an individual bathroom for you.


Where are meals taken?  

At the dining hall, nearby the training center.


Will there be other high school or college students living and working there this summer?

Yes, there will be college students and postgraduates working here.


Computer access/usage and telephone access:

Is it advisable for me to bring a laptop computer with me?  

Yes, it will be more convenient to carry a personal laptop. 

Will I have access to a work computer?

You will have access to a work computer if you need.

Will I have Internet access at work? And in my living quarters?

There is internet access in both the training center and the lab. You may use as you will. And you can use your own personal web-based e-mail address. There is no wireless network.


Is the workweek Monday through Friday?  The typical workday consists of how many hours?  

Yes, 7 hours a day is usual, although sometimes because of the experiments, there can be a little change in the schedule – working earlier or later.


In case of a medical need or emergency, is there a clinic or medical facility near the place I will be working?

Yes, there is a clinic in the Academy and also many good hospitals in downtown Changsha.


Is there any additional information you would like for me to have?  Are there recommended readings or any topics I should research to better prepare myself for my summer project?  

It will be helpful for you to learn basic molecular knowledge in advance.
