Live with the Laureate: A Conversation with Heidi Kühn
Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist Cheryl Jennings will interview 2023 World Food Prize Laureate Heidi Kühn about the work of her nonprofit organization, Roots of Peace, which Kühn founded in 1997 to replace remnants of war and restore the land to agricultural uses with the planting of millions of grapevines and fruit trees.
Kühn and Roots of Peace began building peace through agriculture 25 years ago by partnering with wineries in her home state of California to raise funds to remove landmines in Croatia and replant vineyards and orchards. She has since worked in nine countries, including current projects in Afghanistan and Vietnam, and is exploring starting a program in Ukraine.

Live with the Laureate
Following the Laureate Announcement, 2022 World Food Prize Laureate Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig joined us for a special conversation on May 26 to discuss her work, passion and outlook. She was joined by Andrew Revkin, a renowned environmental journalist with over 30 years of experience and founding director of the new Initiative on Communication and Sustainability at Columbia University’s Earth Institute.
She Who Provides: Agriculture and Climate Essentials
The shocks and disruption to our food systems and agri-value chains from conflict, climate change and epidemiological disasters, such as the COVID19 pandemic, are rippling throughout the world. These shocks are occurring in the midst of an accelerating climate crisis that is impacting every country on every continent without exception, and our international and local food production systems. Recent events demonstrate that global supply chains are intrinsically interlinked and the impact of individual events quickly cascades around the world at high speed with rising food and energy prices. Whether the shock is a war, flood, famine or drought, women are disproportionately impacted and food insecurity increases. These short-term and long-term consequences must be mitigated with viable solutions to empower women’s production capacity and purchasing power to ensure food security for all.

Defining Medium to Long-term Improvements for Resilient Food Systems
May 14, 2020
This Digital Dialogue addresses critical issues for a resilient global food system. In this session, experts look to the medium to longer-term needs for reshaping the food system, especially as espoused in numerous global calls to action and open letters in circulation. For example, recently world leaders called to design COVID-19 response measures to minimize the risks of the pandemic’s impact on food security, and take action in three key areas: maintaining global food trade, supporting the vulnerable, and investing in sustainable, resilient food systems.
An open letter to the G20 and UN now calls for addressing the inter-related challenges of hunger, malnutrition, climate change and environmental degradation, emphasizing the need for concerted, proactive and collective actions. “As the leaders of the powerful and rich nations try to limit the damage of COVID-19, we must not forget the actions needed now to ensure that there will be food and nutrition for the poorest and the weakest members of the human family,” said Ismail Serageldin, Emeritus Librarian of Alexandria and signatory to the open letter.
