Description:

LULAC Council 317 is grassroots, volunteer‑driven organization dedicated to advancing the well‑being, dignity, and civil rights of Hispanic, immigrant, and low‑income families in Columbus Junction and the surrounding rural communities. As part of the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights organization, our council focuses on removing barriers that limit access to food, education, health services, and economic stability.

We operate a culturally responsive food pantry, coordinate large‑scale food distributions, and provide bilingual support for essential applications, including healthcare, public benefits, and legal processes. Our programs also include citizenship preparation classes, senior engagement through Golden Lotería meals, mobile health clinics, and mental‑health resource navigation. Guided by lived experience and deep community trust, LULAC Council 317 serves families who often fall through the gaps of traditional systems, ensuring they receive not only resources, but respect, advocacy, and a welcoming place to belong.

Volunteer Opportunities:

LULAC Council 317 offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, including weekly food pantry shifts, mobile food distributions, donation pick‑ups, senior meal support through Golden Lotería, assistance with citizenship classes, and help during health and wellness clinics. Volunteers can also participate in monthly council meetings, provide bilingual application support, assist with community outreach, and help with seasonal projects such as holiday food baskets, coat and toy drives, and farmworker relief events. Youth volunteers are welcome to earn service hours through pantry work, events, and community projects.
