India | Pastureland Restoration

Avijit Ghosh conducts groundbreaking research and promotes technological advancements in sustainable land and natural resource management. Ghosh and his team have successfully restored community pasturelands in 15 villages across four Indian states and designed low-intensity rotational grazing strategies for sustaining soil health. Their research in carbon sequestration potential across 21 land-use systems and ecosystem service of 17 land-use systems has provided critical data for climate-smart land management. Their grassland restoration efforts covering 80 hectares and community pasture restoration in 50 hectares using native grasses have significantly enhanced soil carbon sequestration and biodiversity. The development of smart fertilizers tailored for semi-arid regions, recycling waste mica as a potassium source for degraded lands, and in-situ rice residue management techniques to reduce phosphorus fertilizer needs by 15% are revolutionary solutions for sustainable farming. Ghosh is a scientist at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Indian Grasslands and Fodder Institute.
