Evangelista Chekera

Zimbabwe | Poultry Brooding Technology

Determined to address high chick mortality rates on smallholder farms in Zimbabwe, Evangelista Chekera launched her own poultry project in 2016, conducting extensive research, including travelling to neighboring countries to learn best practices. By 2017, she developed a chick brooding device designed to reduce mortality rates by 95%, mimicking the natural warmth of a mother hen. The device integrates three important innovations: a brooder ring, keeping chicks within a designated area; a biomass-powered heater, an eco-friendly alternative to charcoal; and a heat reflector, ensuring even heat distribution. After achieving a 95% reduction in chick mortality, Chekera shared her innovation with local poultry farmers, leading to the creation of Passion Poultry, a company dedicated to innovative poultry solutions for small-scale farmers. Today, it works with over 500 farmers and partners for distribution, logistics and digital marketing.
