Juana Galindo Gutiérrez

Farmer from Lerma, State of Mexico

Originally from the community of San Pedro Huitzizilapan in the municipality of Lerma, State of Mexico. Of Otomí origin; since she was a child her parents taught her a taste for agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of corn since in her community agriculture was one of the main economic activities. In 2018, she worked as a cooperating producer in MasAgro putting into practice conservation agriculture in her plot, her main concern was not to use chemical products.

Currently, she continues to work under conservation agriculture with her husband and they practice agroecological pest management (MAP) by planting sunflower strips around their plot. Under this system she grows fava beans in winter thanks to the moisture that is conserved in the soil since she now leaves the stubble on the plot and in this way she obtains 2 harvests per year, which was a great innovation for the region since in the region there is only 1 cycle in spring and summer and it is under seasonal crops.

In 2021, she will participate in the campaign "My plot does not burn" with SADER and CIMMYT.
