Ever wonder how much water it takes to bring food to your dinner table or fuel to your gas tank? Have we made enough progress to improve our water use efficiency? Are there ways we can do better?

The world is facing a balancing act: working to feed nearly 10 billion people by 2050 while being good stewards of our limited natural resources. To achieve this balance, we must understand how our water is allocated and how well we are using it. To date, there hasn’t been a standard measurement for water use in crops, livestock or ethanol production -- until now.

The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute invites you to explore the importance of these issues as we release our Nebraska Water Productivity Report. The report assesses the water productivity of crops and livestock and can be applied to other parts of the U.S. and worldwide. It also compares the water, energy and carbon footprint of corn and sugarcane bioethanol from Nebraska and Brazil, respectively. The methods developed can be used throughout the world to effectively benchmark water use in food and biofuel production and help us develop better ways to improve water productivity.

The report author and other experts welcome your input as we discuss the next steps to using these findings, while enjoying refreshments and hors d'oeuvres with your colleagues.
