The World Food Prize announced today the opening of the application process for all “At-Large U.S. States” who wish to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute October 16-19 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Each year, over 200 exceptional high school students from around the world are selected to participate in the three-day Global Youth Institute hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation.
This annual event aims to inspire the next generation of global leaders to pursue meaningful careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by connecting students with industry experts who are working to address critical issues in global food security.
"Being a participant at the GYI has exposed me to the fact that lack of education is a major cause of widespread food insecurity,” said Ruth Acolatse, 2018 GYI delegate from Ghana. “I was fortunate enough to meet people who inspired me to see the world from a whole new perspective."
Selected students and their teacher mentors travel to Des Moines, Iowa, in mid-October to attend this exciting three-day event at which they interact with Nobel and World Food Prize Laureates and discuss pressing food security and agricultural issues with international experts.
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply for an at-large delegation spot if they reside in a state that does not host their own state youth institute. Students can find more information regarding their state’s application process at www.worldfoodprize.org/youth.
During the Global Youth Institute student delegates present and discuss their own unique solutions to combating complex issues in food security with international experts, connect with other students from around the world, tour cutting-edge industrial and research facilities, and take part in symposium discussions with global leaders in science, industry and policy.
ABOUT THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE: The World Food Prize is the foremost international award recognizing the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. The Prize was founded in 1986 by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, the World Food Prize has honored 48 outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions throughout the world. The World Food Prize annually hosts the Borlaug Dialogue international symposium and a variety of youth education programs to help further the discussion on cutting-edge global food security issues and inspire the next generation to end hunger.
