The World Food Prize Foundation announced today that Madeline Goebel has been named the new Director of the Iowa Hunger Summit and Community Outreach.
In making this announcement, Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, said, “I was so impressed by Ms. Goebel’s performance as a college intern on our staff, that when a position opened with the Foundation, she was the first person that I thought to contact. She has been so effective in her role as Program Manager of our Iowa Hunger Directory, that she was the natural choice to be promoted to the greater responsibility involved with being Director of the Iowa Hunger Summit.”
In her new position, Ms. Goebel will be responsible for planning the annual Iowa Hunger Summit, which over the past decade, has grown to become the premier conference in the state for those confronting hunger. This conference gathers leaders from across Iowa that represent community organizations, business and industry, state and local governments, and other individuals and groups that lead or participate in fighting hunger within the state.
In preparation for the 2018 Iowa Hunger Summit, Ms. Goebel will work towards sharing information about the many outstanding efforts of Iowans in ensuring adequate food for all, encouraging citizens to continue expanding on these efforts, increasing statewide awareness of hunger, poverty, and related issues and celebrating the leadership of key state hunger fighters with the presentation of Iowa SHARES Humanitarian Award.
The Iowa Hunger Summit was established in 2006 to honor Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, with three former Iowa Governors as Honorary Co-Founders (Robert D. Ray, Terry E. Branstad and Tom Vilsack). The first summit was held in 2007 with the participation of Governor Chet Culver.
Ms. Goebel began her association with the World Food Prize Foundation in early 2015 as a George Washington Carver Intern. In that capacity, she worked closely with the Foundation’s Director of Planning and Director of Iowa Education Programs in coordinating and facilitating the Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium and the Iowa Youth Institute. After the conclusion of her internship, Ms. Goebel returned to the World Food Prize when she served as the Program Manager for both the Foundation’s database and the Iowa Hunger Directory. She has also played a key role as a member of the annual Laureate Award Ceremony planning team.

"It has been an inspiring experience working with our Iowa Hunger Directory and I look forward to continuing the much needed conversations surrounding food insecurity and hunger across our state."
Ms. Goebel briefly lived in Grenoble, France, where she attended the Universite Stendhal, studying language and multiculturalism. Additionally, in Grenoble, she volunteered at Maison de L'International, working to strengthen French understanding of the United States. Following her studies in France, Ms. Goebel spent nearly four months living in Cameroon where her studies concentrated on the themes of social pluralism and development. While in Cameroon, Ms. Goebel conducted independent research on family farming in a rural setting. This hands-on experience sparked her interest in food insecurity and agriculture. Upon her return to the U.S., Ms. Goebel chose to continue her involvements in food insecurity and found the World Food Prize to be a platform for her interests.
Ms. Goebel additionally has worked in public relations and public affairs, as an intern at LS2group, a Des Moines communications firm. Ms. Goebel holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a minor in Economics and a certificate in French from Drake University.
