School Tours

The Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates is a public museum, educational facility and a place of inspiration for all Iowans. It is a magnificent setting where students can explore the awe-inspiring stories of some of Iowa’s greatest heroes and the achievements of world-renowned scientists and leaders who are helping to feed the world.

The Global Challenges exhibit provides up-to-date, world-wide information on plants and animals, water, nutrition and health, environment, people, technology and infrastructure and how different countries and cultures are fighting the battle against hunger and starvation.

Working in teams, the Hall of Laureates’ interactive, inquiry-based learning platform can provide students with a quality educational experience that will enhance their critical thinking skills.

Student Audience
The Dr. Norman Borlaug Hall of Laureates provides a significant educational experience in a magnificent setting. The tour and exhibits are best presented to students in the fifth grade and above. The concepts and challenges presented fit strategically into a school’s social studies and science curriculum.

Tour Information
School tours must be scheduled 60 days in advance on a Wednesday or Thursday at 9:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. We can only schedule one tour each morning and each afternoon. Please allow 90 minutes for your visit to the Hall of Laureates. If you have special requests or circumstances, please let us know in advance.

For an optimal educational experience, The World Food Prize requests that groups be no more than 40 students with a minimum of four teachers or chaperones who stay with their group for the entire time.

We request that students leave backpacks, cell phones and other items on their bus, if possible. If not, we request that the students’ bags be left in a designated space in the Hall. No food or drink are allowed in the Hall of Laureates.

Tour Agenda
The students’ tour will begin with a ten-minute orientation video that gives background on the Hall of Laureates and The World Food Prize. We will provide a worksheet with a clipboard and pencil for each student. After a brief discussion of the video, students will be split into two groups. They will then travel through the rooms with a docent who will provide background information on the themes and artwork in each space. This currently includes a brief walk-through of the photography exhibit 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World by Howard G. Buffett.

To schedule a school tour please contact Nicole Barreca at nbarreca@worldfoodprize.org or 515.245.3735.
