Director of Youth Leadership Development

Kelsey Tyrrell joined the World Food Prize Foundation in 2016 as the Director of Iowa Education Programs and was named the Director of Global Education Programs in 2017.

She is responsible for the planning and coordination of the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute (GYI) as well as expanding strategic partnerships with schools, non-profits, public officials, and key stakeholders at the state, national and international level to inspire the next generation of humanitarian leaders to end hunger and poverty. 

In addition to her role with the GYI, Kelsey directs the Iowa Youth Institute which annually attracts over 500 Iowa high school students and teachers to a day-long program at Iowa State University which emphasizes STEM subjects and agricultural science in fighting hunger and poverty world-wide.  

Prior to her position at the World Food Prize, Kelsey was a Program Manager for the Mentoring Moms program at Catholic Charities and was responsible for connecting young families to local food resources, affordable housing, and career-readiness programs. She also has extensive experience engaging high school youth in career-based mentoring programs, with an emphasis in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM). She served for 2 years as a representative on the Iowa Mentoring Partnership Advisory Council and has also been involved with local and statewide initiatives to combat human trafficking in Iowa.

Kelsey graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Youth Services Administration. She studied abroad in Okinawa, Japan as an intern for Camp Adventure Youth Services. She completed her Master’s in Public Administration in 2014, with an emphasis in Non-Profit Leadership from Drake University. She was also a George Washington Carver intern in 2013.
