Megan Srinivas of Fort Dodge was awarded the World Food Prize John Chrystal Intern Award during the 2004 World Food Prize Laureate Ceremony on October 14, 2004 at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.
Srinivas attends Fort Dodge High School and is being recognized for her outstanding work as a 2003 World Food Prize Youth Institute Borlaug-Ruan Intern at the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi, Kenya. In her eight-week internship at ICIPE, Srinivas researched the role of education on household food security in rural Africa.
Srinivas was selected as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern after twice completing the World Food Prize Youth Institute, in October of 2001 and 2002. The Youth Institute, a prerequisite for International Internship eligibility, exposes young Iowans to opportunities associated with careers in food, agriculture and natural resource disciplines. Youth Institute participants interact with World Food Prize Laureates and Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug to discuss issues relating to food security throughout the world.
Srinivas will receive her award during the World Food Prize Laureate Ceremony where Professor Yuan Longping of China and Dr. Monty Jones of Sierra Leone will be named as co-recipients of the 2004 World Food Prize. The two are being recognized for their respective advancements in rice breeding that have saved millions of lives throughout the world.
