Rachael Collier Addie Hall


Rachael Collier, a 2004 graduate of Mediapolis High School, and Addie Hall, a 2004 graduate of Hamburg High School were awarded the World Food Prize Ahmanson Intern Award during the 2004 World Food Prize Laureate Ceremony on October 14, 2004 at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines.

Collier and Hall are being recognized for their outstanding work as 2003 World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International High School Interns.

Collier, who is currently a freshman at the University of Iowa, completed her internship at the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru. In her eight-week internship at CIP Collier researched the effectiveness of various pesticides against the Potato Tuber Moth, a pest which has been particularly harmful to the South American potato crop.  Collier was selected as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern after twice completing the World Food Prize Youth Institute, in October of 2001 and 2002.

Hall, who is currently a freshman at Iowa State University, completed her internship at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Phillippines. In her eight-week internship at IRRI, Hall examined the accumulation of starches in certain genetically unique rice plants. Hall was selected as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern after completing the World Food Prize Youth Institute in October of 2002.

Collier and Hall will receive their award during the World Food Prize Laureate Ceremony where Professor Yuan Longping of China and Dr. Monty Jones of Sierra Leone will be named as co-recipients of the 2004 World Food Prize. The two are being recognized for their respective advancements in rice breeding that have saved millions of lives throughout the world.
