About the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship:

The Borlaug-Ruan International Internship is one of the most unique programs in America inspiring science education for high school students.

The Foundation stresses the uniqueness of this program from other "study abroad" internship programs in that the students participate in research projects with world-renowned researchers while getting a first-hand view of real and pressing food security issues and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas. The student becomes an integral part of the project spending time in the lab as well as days or weeks at a time in the field conducting research and gathering data. The goal of the Summer Internship Program is to inspire Iowa youths to pursue careers in food, agricultural and natural resource disciplines.

Any student who has participated in the WFP Youth Institute is welcome to apply. The application consists of submission of the following required materials to the WFP office:

1. a cover letter of interest from the student including a list of particular countries, regions and fields of interest;
2. documentation of educational, extracurricular and personal background (official school transcripts and CV preferred);
3. two teacher recommendation letters; and,
4. a concise, one-page essay explaining why the student would like to participate in the Internship Program and why she/he would be a good candidate.

Because of the responsibilities imposed under the Program, the student applicant should be no less than a high school junior at the time the application process begins, in October each year. The application should reach the World Food Prize office no later than December 31 of each year to be considered as a candidate for the following summer’s internship positions.

Participants in the Summer Internship program are chosen based on:

1. an interview process with the World Food Prize staff;
2. the background and interests of the student applicants;
3. the number of research centers available to host interns; and,
4. the project needs of those research centers.

The interns do not receive compensation for their work, but their travel to and from the center, lodging and meal expenses are paid by the World Food Prize Foundation. To apply for the Internship or for more information contact Lisa Fleming at:
