Dr. Norman Borlaug Returns Home, Honored at Statehouse

Dr. Norman Borlaug, The World Food Prize the founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner, received a hero's welcome upon his return to Iowa.
Borlaug addressed the House and Senate on March 16, 2006, telling lawmakers that political stability in the developing world is directly linked to the food supply.

Both chambers adopted resolutions honoring the work of Dr. Borlaug, who visited the Statehouse just days before his 92nd birthday.

Commonly referred to as the Father of the Green Revolution, Borlaug developed a high-yield wheat that helped turn the tide of starvation in India and Pakistan in the 1960s.

Borlaug credits his upbringing on a small Iowa farm with inspiring his lifework.

"I was born out of the soil of Howard County," he said. "It was that black soil of the Great Depression that led me to a career in agriculture."

More on Dr. Borlaug can be found here.
