On January 25, 2006, Dr. Norman E. Borlaug was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor, by the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field. Dr. Borlaug was recognized in the field of Science and Engineering for his role in spreading the Green Revolution to India. It is often said of Dr. Borlaug that, through his efforts fighting hunger, he has saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived. The Padma Vibhushan was established in 1954. The annual award follows the Bharat Ratna as the highest honor in India. In 2006, for the eight consecutive year, the Bharat Ratna was not conferred. The Padma Vibhushan is awarded in conjunction with the Republic Day celebrations in India. |
