Nominations Open for World Food Prize Foundation Norman Borlaug Field Award

05/02/2022

The World Food Prize Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the renowned Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, Endowed by The Rockefeller Foundation. This award recognizes exceptional, science-based achievement in international agriculture and food production by an individual under the age of 40.

Awardees emulate the same intellectual courage, stamina and determination in the fight to eliminate global hunger and poverty demonstrated by Dr. Norman Borlaug as a young scientist working in Mexico in the 1940s and '50s.

“Each year, the Borlaug Field Award recognizes a researcher making progress in their field in food and agriculture,” said World Food Prize Foundation President Barbara Stinson. “This year’s recipient will honor one of a growing number of young leaders shaping the future of food security and agriculture sustainability.”

The award honors an individual who is working closely and directly in the field or at the production or processing level with farmers, animal herders, fishers or others in rural communities, in any discipline or enterprise across the entire food production, processing and distribution chain. Nomination criteria, the selection procedure and other information can be found at www.worldfoodprize.org/nominate. Nominations will be accepted through June 15, 2022, for the 2022 Award.

In 2021, the Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application was presented to Dr. Elliott Dossou-Yovo of Benin. Dossou-Yovo was recognized for spearheading innovative water management systems for resilient rice production in the face of climate change. His groundbreaking research and close collaboration with smallholder farmers has empowered thousands of rice farmers throughout West Africa to use climate-smart cultivation techniques to earn greater incomes, achieve food and nutrition security, and enhance agroecosystems.

Since its founding in 2012, this $10,000 award has been given to 10 high-achieving individuals from around the world. The 2022 award will be presented in Des Moines, Iowa, during World Food Prize week, October 18 - 20, 2022.
