Mohammad Yunus to Receive Congressional Gold Medal, Become One of Seven People to Earn Top Three U.S. Civilian Awards

1994 World Food Prize Laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus will receive the Congressional Gold Medal. The award is bestowed by theUnited States Congress and is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Presidential Citizens Medal, the highest civilian award in the United States. He will be awarded the honor in early 2011.

Professor Yunus has previously received the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize and 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. Only 7 individuals have received all three distinctions: Norman Borlaug, Martin Luther King Jr., Elie Wiesel, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and now Muhammad Yunus. 

He won the World Food Prize in 1994 for his his original approach to promoting the economic and social empowerment of the poorest citizens of Bangladesh, specifically women and children.
