Chris Dowswell, Dr. Norman Borlaug's longtime associate and collaborator, died of a heart attack at his home in Mexico on Saturday evening, Nov. 19, 2011.

Dowswell was an agricultural economist who worked for many years with Dr. Borlaug. He worked on a wide array of projects and most recently served as executive director of programs for the Sasakawa Africa Association.

Amb. Kenneth M. Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, shared the following comments with colleagues:

"I am so very sad to share with you the heartbreaking news that Chris Dowswell, Dr. Borlaug's long time associate and invaluable collaborator, died of a heart attack in Mexico on Saturday evening. November 19.

This was a sudden and unexpected event. Chris was here at the World Food Prize in October and was, as always, filled with energy and enthusiasm for his role and partnership with us (and so many others) in preserving and advancing Norm's legacy. He was a very special friend to the World Food Prize and to me personally. We here at the Foundation are devastated by this terrible development.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chris' family and his many, many friends all a round the world."
