World Food Prize Laureates David Beckmann and Dr. Hans Herren will speak at Worldwatch Institute's 15th annual State of the World Symposium on Jan. 19, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The symposium will highlight Worldwatch Institute's newly launched report, State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet.

From Worldwatch Institute:

Agricultural development has come to a crossroads. Nearly a half-century after the Green Revolution a large share of the human family is still chronically hungry. At the same time, investments in agricultural development by governments, international lenders, and foundations are at historic lows. But recently, a new generation of innovative approaches to hunger alleviation has emerged from farmers groups, private voluntary organizations, universities, and agribusiness companies. Please join the pioneers of environmentally sustainable agriculture practices for an afternoon briefing that will explore the innovative next steps required to create a sustainable food system.

The State of the World 2011 report covers agricultural innovations and major successes in preventing food waste, building resilience to climate change, and strengthening farming in cities— policy briefs are available online now. The policy briefs cover every chapter in the book, including a chapter  on reducing food waste written by Tristram Stewart and a chapter how addressing the unique needs of women farmers, can improve livelihoods and diets for entire communities written by Dianne Forte, Royce Gloria Androa and Marie-Ange Binwaho.  State of the World 2011 provides new insight into the under-appreciated innovations that are working right now on the ground to alleviate hunger.
