2008 Hoover-Wallace Dinner Honors Ponseti, Leach and Culver; Raises Over $58,000 for Internship Program
The Fifth Annual Hoover-Wallace Dinner, held at the Coralville Marriott, honored the exceptional humanitarian and public service of three Eastern Iowans.
Nearly 500 Iowans attended the special event to pay tribute to Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, former Congressman Jim Leach and former Senator John Culver.
Dr. Ponseti was presented with the Hoover-Wallace Humanitarian Award for his pioneering treatment of clubfoot. When clubfoot, a congenital bone defect, goes untreated children are left unable to walk. It is a particularly severe problem in developing countries. Dr. Ponseti's "Ponseti Method" has become the standard of treating clubfoot internationally.
Rep. Leach and Sen. Culver were presented with a new award, the Norman E. Borlaug Award for Public Service. The award, named in honor of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and World Food Prize founder Norman Borlaug, was presented in recognition of Leach and Culver's dedicated careers in public service and the Congress.
The dinner raised $58,400 for the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship program. The 2008 Borlaug-Ruan Interns were announced and introduced at the dinner.
