The second annual Hoover-Wallace Dinner, held at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines, raised money for the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship Program.
More than 600 people attended the event, which honored Gov. Robert Ray and Vice President Water Mondale for their efforts to rescue thousands of Vietnamese refugees, as well as their efforts to deliver food and medical aid to Thai and Cambodian refugees after the Khmer Rouge genocide in 1979.

The event praised others involved in the non-partisan partnerships that formed between leaders in Minnesota and Iowa to deliver this assistance through the Iowa Sends Help to Aid Refugees and End Starvation, better known as Iowa SHARES.

Those honorees included Dr. William Rosenfeld of Iowa SHARES and Karen Estanzly of the American Refugee Committee. Local, state and federal government officials joined event hosts from the World Food Prize Foundation and the Des Moines Rotary Clubs in recognizing the accomplishments of these individuals.
