The 2002 World Food Prize was presented to Dr. Pedro A. Sanchez of Cuba at Ceremony in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University. The event featured performances by world-famous musician Ray Charles and the Des Moines Symphony.
The World Food Prize Iowa 4-H Award, in honor of Jessie Field Shambaugh and Norman E. Borlaug, was also presented at the event. Further honors came from 2001-02 President of Rotary International, Richard D. King, in recognition of Dr. Borlaug receiving the Rotary Award for World Understanding and Peace.
