The World Food Prize Foundation

2002 Ceremony

THE 2002 WORLD FOOD PRIZE was presented to Dr. Pedro A. Sanchez of Cuba during a ceremony in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University on October 24. The ceremony took place during the 2004 Borlaug Dialogue, themed "From the Middle East to the Middle West: Managing Freshwater Shortages and Regional Water Security."

Dr. Sanchez received the award for his revolutionary methods for restoring fertility to soil which helped to preserve delicate ecoystems and gave hope to many living on marginalized lands.

The event featured performances by world-famous musician Ray Charles and the Des Moines Symphony.

The World Food Prize Iowa 4-H Award, in honor of Jessie Field Shambaugh and Norman E. Borlaug, was also presented at the event. Further honors came from 2001-02 President of Rotary International, Richard D. King, in recognition of Dr. Borlaug receiving the Rotary Award for World Understanding and Peace.
