Research provides the evidence needed to produce safe, nutritious diets, especially for our most vulnerable populations. Through these and other key topics, roundtable speakers will highlight successful projects for rapidly scaling rural agriculture development.

Chair of the Council of Advisors at the World Food Prize Foundation, Paul Schickler, and Land O'Lakes President and CEO Beth Ford discuss the state of farmers access to new tools and technology in rural areas and the need for expanded access. They will address critical issues like climate change, youth and how the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted rural communities. Beth and Paul will explore the importance of ensuring access to technologies such as broadband, to bring about greater connectivity between urban and rural communities, which are co-dependent in the area of food security.
Workshop A: The Global Food Security Index: Exploring Challenges and Developing Solutions - Transcript

The 10th iteration of the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) launches on October 12, 2021. This long running index developed by Economist Impact and funded by Corteva Agriscience will be used in the workshop to analyze data across multiple years and identify lessons learned across the entire program. Additionally, the 2021 GFSI tool will be used to examine underlying factors affecting food insecurity across the world.

The World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony is often held in the magnificent Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines. The ceremony rivals that of the Nobel Prize, drawing people from around the world to partake in this event. Each year, world-class performers take the stage to honor the World Food Prize Laureate. Past performers have included Ray Charles, John Denver, Chachi Tadesse, and Kathak Gunjan. Following the Ceremony, the celebration continues at the Laureate Award Gala Reception, held in the Capitol Rotunda.

Roundtable 3: Nutrition-Sensitive Food Systems - Transcript

Actors at different levels need to work together to improve access to and affordability of healthier foods, ideally including locally produced fruits and vegetables. Blue foods and aquatic food systems play a vital role in achieving good nutrition and health, especially for women and children. Strengthening community engagement and fostering greater government accountability and transparency has been shown to improve access to healthier foods. These and other strategies will be explored by esteemed Roundtable experts.
Workshop D: How Resiliently Designed Food Systems Achieve Both NRM and Nutrition Wins?

Examining ways to apply agroecological principles to build agricultural and livestock systems, this workshop will demonstrate how to achieve gains in both ecological and human health. The comparison between food security programs at different stages of development in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo allows us to analyze the environment-nutrition nexus in these areas. Additionally, the session will walk participants through the use of a new Resilience Design (RD) tool developed under the USAID’s SCALE Award.
