The World Food Prize Board of Reviewers

About the World Food Prize Foundation:

Founded by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Father of the Green Revolution, the World Food Prize Foundation's mission is to elevate innovations and inspire action to sustainably increase the quality, quantity, and availability of food for all.

The World Food Prize annually hosts the Borlaug Dialogue international symposium and a variety of youth education and leadership development programs to further the discussion on cutting-edge hunger and food security issues and inspire the next generation to end hunger.

The World Food Prize Youth Institutes:

Dr. Borlaug believed that the most effective way to inspire and prepare young leaders is to give them a voice, and a place at the table in the problem-solving process.

The World Food Prize Youth Institutes are a life-changing experience where high school students engage with local leaders and experts on critical global challenges, participate in hands-on activities, and explore exciting ways to make a difference around the world.

To participate in a Youth Institute, students write a 3-5 page research paper, with the guidance of a teacher/mentor, on a range of global challenges in a developing country and propose their own solutions.

The World Food Prize Board of Reviewers:

This distinguished group was established to mentor and encourage the next generation of young leaders in the fight to end hunger.

 The purpose of the Board of Reviewers is to:

  • Nurture each student's unique interests and validate their creative, original ideas;

  • Offer thought-provoking questions to extend the range of their understanding;

  • Provide practical feedback on their findings;

  • Offer suggestions and real-world advice on the implementation of their recommendations; and

  • Suggest revisions on grammar, style, structure, and citations to help each student improve their paper and better communicate their ideas.

Responsibilities:

Reviewers will read research papers and provide individual feedback for each student. These papers are written by students ages 12-18 with different backgrounds, abilities, interests, and understanding of global issues. It is critical that reviewers understand the students' varying levels of exposure to agricultural, food security, and international development topics in order to remain positive, supportive, and to not push personal opinions.

The students write about a wide variety of countries and topics (e.g. plant science, human rights, water sanitation).Reviewers are not expected to be experts on all issues and countries. They are, however, expected to be able to critically analyze the paper, ask thoughtful questions, provide constructive criticism, and objectively score the papers.

Required Skills:

  • Strong writing skills including spelling, punctuation, and grammar;

  • Understanding of the components of a quality research paper;

  • Critical thinking skills;

  • Effective time management;

  • Detail-oriented;

  • Ability to be objective;

  • Understanding of global food security challenges and solutions, sustainable agriculture and/or international development; and

  • Genuine interest in the student's growth and educational experience.

Time commitment:

We estimate that each Reviewer will provide feedback for 60-70 student papers from February to July. Each Reviewer can expect to devote at least 5 hours per week to provide feedback and peer-reviews, with up to 8-10 hours per week at busy times of the year.

Student papers will be assigned in sets of 10, and each Reviewer will have 7-10 days to complete feedback. The estimated time to thoughtfully read, analyze, and provide feedback for a paper will take approximately 30 minutes each.

Feedback for peer-review will also be assigned in sets of 10. Each Reviewer will have one week to complete the peer-review process. The estimated time to finalize each piece of feedback is approximately 10 minutes.

Compensation:

Each reviewer will receive $8 per reviewed paper and $4 per peer review. Payments will be processed after all papers are reviewed.
